Expo visitors wowed by virtual EAF experience

Visitors experience a virtual electric arc furnace

Experiencing Tata Steel UK’s proposed Electric Arc Furnace in Virtual Reality was the major attraction for visitors to the biggest and best exhibition for the UK metals industry at Birmingham’s NEC this year.

Customers, journalists, politicians and industry experts queued up to try on a headset and see first-hand what the 3 million tonne per year arc furnace will look like in situ, at UK Metals Expo 2024

Marketing Communications Manager Carlo di Terlizzi said: “Everyone who tried on the virtual reality headset was blown away by what they could see. The experience allows people to view the arc furnace from different angles, and while it’s a representation, it is based on engineering drawings, so it’s pretty true to life.”

Tata Steel was literally at the centre of this year’s UK Metals Expo as the great and good of the industry gravitated to the sponsored networking area, which served not only as a place to meet with customers and industry contacts, but also to share the company’s journey to a decarbonised future.

Tata Steel also provided a huge number of contributors to a vast range of seminars, debates and panel discussions throughout the two days, with Chief Executive Officer Rajesh Nair taking part in a “View form the Top” discussion with Lord Rupert Redesdale, Chairman of UK Metals Expo.

He said: “lt was great to have the opportunity this year to share our decarbonisation plans with such a wide audience, and to reinforce why a green steel future is so important to maintaining a viable steelmaking operation in the UK.”

The event coincided with the new UK Government’s announcement of the formal signing of the £500m Grant Funding Agreement (GFA) as part of the £1.25bn investment in transitioning to low CO2 steelmaking.

Chief Commercial Officer, Anil Jhanji also hosted a reception for over fifty key customers, saying: “It was a chance to extend our gratitude to customers for their continued support as we undertake our restructuring and move forward with our transition.

“It was great to hear that the government announcement gave our customers further reassurance in our plans going forward and in our continuing trusted and collaborative relationships.”

Watch out for the next edition of the SteelCast podcast on the usual platforms and YouTube, as the Communication Team talked to presenters, exhibitors, politicians and industry experts at the show.
