Podcast: Fail to plan, plan to fail

Port Talbot

Gaining planning permission for the £1.25 billion development of Port Talbot steel works is a complex and in-depth process. Tata Steel's Head of Legal Property explains what is involved.

As Tata Steel UK prepares to spend £1.25 billion on decarbonising its iron and steel making facilities in Port Talbot and improving its casting and rolling facilities on site over the coming three years, there is much work to do in advance of any spades being put in the ground in terms of preparing for, submitting, and hopefully gaining planning permission.

Natalie Young, Head of Legal Planning, Tata Steel UK took time out of her busy schedule to join Gareth Brookes on the SteelCast podcast to explain what is required, why and by when. And whilst the basic process may be similar to getting planning consent for a house extension, understandably, building a 3 million tonne arc furnace and all the associated infrastructure, is a little more involved.

In the course of recording the podcast, SteelCast also visited a community outreach event, which is part of the pre-application consultation process with various stakeholders. Head of PR Tim Rutter spoke with Andrea Kellegher from Planning Consultancy experts Turley about that communication programme.

Watch out for future episodes of SteelCast on YouTube and the usual podcast channels, which will following the planning and build programme all the way through to 2028.

And remember, you won't see this on the telly. It's up close, it's personal, and a real insight into the business workings, developments and investments and the daily lives of people inside one of the UK's most dynamic and interesting industries,
