Peace, love and solar-powered steel

Glastonbury Festival has added green steel to its list of ‘Worthy’ causes thanks to a strong partnership between Tata Steel UK and British companies, Davro Steel and Solarport.

A special type of coated steel has been used as the frame for a ground-mounted solar system which is powering the festival’s Mandala Stage with clean, sustainable energy.

Tata Steel’s Marketing Project Manager, Emma Bartley, said: “It’s fantastic to have our high-tech product, MagiZinc – made in Port Talbot and processed and coated at Llanwern – featured at this world famous event.

“Coated with magnesium and zinc, MagiZinc has a guaranteed lifespan of 25 years, which not only reduces consumption, but is far kinder to the environment. This a great solution for a resource-intensive event such as this, which welcomes 200,000 festival goers each year.

“Steel continues to play a critical role in the rapidly growing solar energy sector, which is why we’re delighted to strengthen our relationship with Solarport through one of our major customers Davro Steels to make this project happen.”

Solarport Chairman and founder, Dave Tattershall said: “Not only is this a fun, high-profile event to be involved in, but we are pleased to see the that organisers recognise the crucial role solar energy has to play in Britain’s future.

“Our mounting system is easily transported, installed and removed without damaging the ground, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution for big festivals and events.

“There are also huge economic and environmental benefits in using locally sourced materials, which is why continuing collaboration with Tata Steel UK is critical.”

Davro Steel Managing Director, Greg Anthony added  “We are thrilled to highlight our successful partnership with Tata Steel UK and Solarport in bringing this innovative product to life. This collaboration showcases the incredible potential of green steel in sustainable applications.

“Together, we are setting a new standard for eco-friendly solutions in large-scale events and beyond, demonstrating the crucial role of locally sourced materials and renewable energy in shaping a greener future.”

Emma finished: “We estimate that by 2035, around 1.5 million tonnes of steel will be needed to supply solar energy markets in the UK alone.

“This makes the likelihood of UK steel enabling a green energy revolution very real and very exciting.”
